Let’s blow some stuff up!

I’m not a fan of Renny Harlin. He may be an “acclaimed director” in some people’s eyes, but to me he’ll always be the guy who gave us The Adventures of Ford Fairlane.

Hands down Renny Harlin's best film is The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (1990). No argument. Otherwise known for his sequels, he has a knack of bringing out the worst in otherwise decent actors (Bruce Willis, Samuel Jackson), while coaxing fun performances out of unexpected places (Andrew Dice Clay, LL Cool J). Despite what some would say has been a disappointing career, the Finnish-born director is persistent in working to bring his ideas to the big screen. One of the best (to drink to) is Deep Blue Sea, a story based on using DNA from “enhanced” sharks to cure Alzheimer’s Disease, a completely plausible storyline given credence by Caucasian-sounding Jackson’s command performance. Too bad the Diceman was unavailable to be the sharks’ straight man.

9. The Adventures of Ford Fairlane
In 1988, Andrew Dice Clay was one of the hottest comedians around; by 1990, he was Gallagher with a cigarette poking out of his mouth. Let us consider ourselves fortunate, then, that it took so long to deliver The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, a pompadoured turd of an action/comedy that surely would have been a hit if Hollywood had been a little quicker on the draw. Twenty years later, there are only two interesting things about this stupid movie — the fact that director Renny Harlin was in such high demand at the time that it shared the Top 10 with another of his films, Die Hard 2, and this video:

Tossing the Dice

Forgive me, father, for I have sinned. It has been 20 years since I chuckled a couple of times during "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" (9 p.m., FMC) and helped make Andrew Dice Clay a temporary star. I'm not the only sinner. Please add to the list director Renny Harlin and co-stars Wayne Newton, Priscilla Presley, Lauren Holly and Morris Day. They knew not what they were doing.
